“SAI’S ADVICE ON CONDUCT IN LIFE”

Baba in chapters 10 and 15 of Sri Sai Satcharita had said that He is
servant of His devotees .HE also said that could be found in
everybody’s hearts. Before proceeding to the actual topic, I request
you to accept my pranams.

I would like to place before you the message that has attracted me the
most, when I was reading Satcharita for the first time.

“Life is like a white paper. If you write good words, people will hold
it in high esteem and give respect. On the other hand, if bad words
are written, they will tear it off and drop it in the nearest
dustbin”.

The best living example is Sri Sai Satcharita itself. Let us go
through chapter 2 of Sri Sai Satcharita. Anna Sahib Dhabolkar wanted
to write Sri Sai Satcharita. Baba said to Shyama-

“He should shed his inner ego and place it at my feet”.

In this way Baba nipped ego from Anna Saheb in the budding stage
itself. Anna Saheb followed the instruction in spirit of the words and
thereafter commenced writing Sri Sai Satcharita which today is
reaching millions and millions of Baba’s devotees. During the writing
stage, Anna saheb was nicknamed as Hemadripanth by Baba. All those
engrossed in regular ‘parayana’ of the Sri Sai Satcharita in their
daily life are getting immensely benefited.

“After climbing few steps on the spiritual ladder, one should learn to
remain there and should neither fall down nor descend”.

This we can see in
In chapter 21 of Sri Sai Satcharita, Baba said to V.H.Takur- “The road
is not that easy as told by Appa. It is not as simple as a buffalo
ride in the valleys of Naneghat. The terrain is difficult one. So also
the spiritual path is a difficult one to follow; Efforts and
concentration are therefore required to be made in the right
direction”.

“In case your life partner pre-deceases, do not repent, switch over to
spiritual life. Spend the remaining portion of the life in chanting
God’s name”.

We can come across this message as we read about Bapu saheb jog and
Khaparde couple.. Bapu saheb jog switched over to saffron clothes
whereas Khaparde spent rest of life in Baba’s service, after demise of
their wives.

“It will be worthwhile to live down in the cool valleys and stay by
the side of calm riverbeds rather than remaining at peaks of life
surrounded by all difficulties.”

We can come across this piece of advice by Baba to one of His
devotees, Tatya Saheb Noolkar; a sub-judge from Pandaripur. Noolkar
delivered land mark judgment that temple ownership has no rights on
the dakshina to the priests from Aaratis. He invited lot of opposition
from the temple management, which in those days was a powerful lobby.
Ultimately He had resigned from his position, unable to withstand the
pressures and mental torture and finally decided to stay in Shirdi.
When Noolkar passed away Baba said-“Tatya has left before us, there is
no rebirth for him”.

Life need not be a big river, it could as well be a small stream, but
even that has to ultimately merge in the sea”.

We co-relate this message with the life of Meghashyam an ardent
devotee of Baba. He was poor and uneducated, but dedicated his entire
life in service of Baba. He died at a very young age. When Megha
passed away, Baba said-“He is my true devotee.” Baba stood by and
participated in the last rites of Megha.

“Life should grow like a tall coconut tree and be useful to society
instead of remaining like a wild useless growth.

We can co-relate this message with the life of Bapu Saheb Booti, a
millionaire in service of Baba. Booti put Baba’s order into practice
by constructing Samadhi mandir with his wealth and grew tall in
stature like a coconut tree. He continues to be useful to millions
and millions of Baba’s devotees and remembered for ever for the great
services rendered.

“Life is like a train travel, your wife and children are like your
co-passengers. They may not like to travel further, the moment you
have changed over to spiritualism.”

This we can infer from the life of Tatya saheb Noolkar, Sub-Judge of
Pandaripur. His wife and children preferred not to go with him to
Shirdi after he has chosen to dedicate his remaining part of his life
in service of Baba. Once Noolkar was going through bad health. Baba
assigned his childhood friend to take care of him in Satewada. Just a
day before Noolkar’s death, his eldest son came from Bombay and
offered ‘Baba’s padha theertha’ to Tatya Saheb Noolkar. He then
breathed his last and Baba blessed Noolkar .Baba said, Noolkar has no
rebirth.

“It is essential to explore God, but it need not necessarily begin
early in life. It could as well start at the middle age."

Kaka sahib Dikshit was a Bar-at-Law in England. He came to Bombay and
practiced there.. Later he visited Shirdi during the year 1909 and
finally became a true devotee of Baba. Anna saheb Dhabolkar came to
Shirdi in the year 1910 and made a beginning to write Sri Sai
Satcharita. With blessings of Baba He became popular as Hemadripanth.
Khaparde, a Lawyer from Amaravathi came to Shirdi in his middle age
and became a true devotee of Baba.

Life is like a seven storied building. Stay in the seventh storey
having seven doors and be nearer to God”.

Let us refer to chapter 14 of Sri Sai Satcharita. Here the first six
storeys are symbolic with the Six Arishadvarghas- Kama, Krodha, Lobha,
Moha, Madha, and Mascharyas. Here devotee is advised to be above them
and live in the seventh storey from where the gap with God would be
least. The seventh storey is the head in the human body which is at
the highest level and has seven openings. The seven openings are the
two eyes, two nostrils, two ears and one mouth, which all happens to
be the sensory organs of the human body.

“Do not get addicted to alcohol as an excuse to overcome difficulties.
Do not fast to please God”.

We can relate this message to an incident in chapter18 of Sri Sai
Satcharita. Baba appeared to one of His devotees addicted to alcohol
in his dream and did not leave him till he promised that he would not
to drink again. In chapter 32 of Sri Sai Satcharita, Baba said to one
of His female devotee Radhabai, not to fast in the name of God.

Only Sadhguru can remove the unwanted growth of weeds of ignorance,
from the crop called wisdom. Efforts have to be put in, by the devote
himself to sustain healthy growth from there onwards.

We can relate this to the conversation Baba had with Nana saheb
chandorkar in the chapter 39 of Sri Sai Satcharita.” Guru shall teach
to recognize ignorance”. It was difficult to understand the meaning of
the words. Baba explained in detail. Removal of Ajnana is to educate
about Jnana and removal of ignorance itself is acquiring wisdom”.

When looking for children, do not grieve on the birth of a female
child. Baba advised to bring her up like any other child, educate her
and perform Kanyadhaan.

We can relate this to an incident in the chapter-47 of Sri Sai
Satcharita. The rich man was born as Veera bhadrappa in a poor
Brahmin’s family. The rich man’s wife was born as priest’s only
daughter, named Gouri. On the advice of Baba, the priest had
performed Kanyadhan of his only daughter with Veera bhadrapa.

“In the last moments, do not grieve over the absence of your children
by your side. Keep extending love to the kid in your neighbourhood,
maybe he would offer the holy water in your last moments”.

We can know this fact from Kaka saheb Dixie’s demise. Hemadripanth
offered water to Dixt in his last moments. Bade Baba offered to
Vijayanad, a sanyasi from Madras. Megha was a bachelor and devotees
from Shirdi offered him a sip of water before his death. Nimonkar an
ardent devotee of Baba, offered holy water to Baba in His last moments
before attaining Mahasamadhi.

SAYING OF SHIRDI SAI BABA.

Why fear when I am here?

I am formless and everywhere

I am in everything and beyond. I fill all space

All that you see taken together is Myself.

I do not shake or move

If one devotes his entire time to me and rests in me, he need fear
nothing for body and soul.

If one sees me and me alone and listens to my Leelas and is devoted
to me alone, he will reach God

My business is to give blessings

I get angry with none. Will a mother get angry with her children? Will
the ocean send back the waters to the several rivers?

I will take you to the end.

Surrender completely to God

If you make me the sole object of your thoughts and aims, you will gain
the supreme goal.

Trust in the Guru fully. That is the only sadhana

I am the slave of my devotee

Stay by me and keep quiet. I will do the rest.

What is our duty? To behave properly. That is enough

My eye is ever on those who love me

Whatever you do, wherever you may be, always bear this in mind: I am
always aware of everything you do.

I will not allow my devotees to come to harm

If a devotee is about to fall, I stretch out my hands to support him or her.

I think of my people day and night. I say their names over and over.

My treasury is open but no one brings carts to take from it. I say,
“Dig!” but no one bothers.

My people do not come to me of their own accord; it is I who seek and
bring them to me.

All that is seen is my form: ant, fly, prince, and pauper

However distant my people may be, I draw them to me just as we pull a
bird to us with a string tied to its foot

I love devotion.

This body is just my house. My guru has long ago taken me away from it

Those who think that Baba is only in Shirdi have totally failed to know me

Without my grace, not even a leaf can move

I look on all with an equal eye

I cannot do anything without God’s permission

God has agents everywhere and their powers are vast

I have to take care of my children day and night and give an account to
God of every paisa

The wise are cheerful and content with their lot in life

If you are wealthy, be humble. Plants bend when they bear fruit.

Spend money in charity; be generous and munificent but not extravagant

Get on with your worldly activities cheerfully, but do not forget God

Do not kick against the pricks of life

Whatever creature comes to you, human or otherwise, treat it with
consideration

Do not be obsessed by the importance of wealth

See the divine in the human being

Do not bark at people and don’t be aggressive, but put up with others’
complaints

There is a wall of separation between oneself and others and between you
and me. Destroy this wall!

Give food to the hungry, water to the thirsty, and clothes to the naked.
Then God will be pleased

Saburi (patience) ferries you across to the distant goal

The four sadhanas and the six Sastras are not necessary. Just has complete
trust in your guru: it is enough

Meditate on me either with form or without form, that is pure bliss

God is not so far away. He is not in the heavens above, nor in hell
below. He is always near you

If anyone gets angry with another, they wound me to the quick

If you cannot endure abuse from another, just say a simple word or two,
or else leave.

What do we lose by another’s good fortune? Let us celebrate with them,
or strive to emulate them.
That should be our desire and determination.

I stay by the side of whoever repeats my name

If formless meditation is difficult, then think of my form just as you
see it here. With such meditation, the difference between subject and
object is lost and the mind dissolves in unity.

If anyone offends you do not return tit for tat.

I am the slave of those who hunger and thirst after me and treat
everything else as unimportant.

Whoever makes me the sole object of their love, merges in me like a
river in the ocean.

Look to me and I will look to you.

What God gives is never exhausted, what man gives never lasts

Be contented and cheerful with what comes.

My devotees see everything as their Guru.

Poverty is the highest of riches and a thousand times superior to
a king’s wealth.

Put full faith in God’s providence.

Whoever withdraws their heart from wife, child, and parents and loves
me, is my real lover.

Distinguish right from wrong and be honest, upright and virtuous.

Do not be obsessed by egotism, imagining that you are the cause of
action: everything is due to God.

If we see all actions as God’s doing, we will be unattached and free
from karmic bondage

Other people’s acts will affect just them. It is only your own deeds
that will affect you.

Do not be idle: work, utter God’s name and read the scriptures.

If you avoid rivalry and dispute, God will protect you.

People abuse their own friends and family, but it is only after
performing many meritorious acts that one gets a human birth.
Why then come to Shirdi and slander people?

Speak the truth and truth alone.

No one wants to take from me what I give abundantly

Do not fight with anyone, nor retaliate, nor slander anyone.

Harsh words cannot pierce your body. If anybody speaks ill of you,
just continue on unperturbed

Choose friends who will stick to you till the end, through thick
and thin.

Meditate on what you read and think of God.

I give my devotees whatever they ask, until they ask for what I want
to give.

You should not stay for even one second at a place where people are
speaking disrespectfully of a saint.

If you do not want to part with what you have, do not lie and claim
that you have nothing, but decline politely saying that circumstances
or your own desires prevent you.

Let us be humble

Satsang that is associating with the good is good. Dussaya, or
associating with evil-minded people,
is evil and must be avoided.

What you sow, you reap. What you give, you get.

Recognize the existence of the Moral Law as governing results. Then
unswervingly follow this Law.

All gods are one. There is no difference between a Hindu and a Muslim.
Mosque and temple are the same.

Fulfill any promises you have made.

Death and life are the manifestations of God’s activity. You cannot
separate the two. God permeates all.

Mukti is impossible for those addicted to lust.

Gain and loss, birth and death are in the hands of God.

When you see with your inner eye. Then you realize that you are God
and not different from Him.

Avoid unnecessary disputation

The giver gives, but really he is sowing the seed for later: the
gift of a rich harvest.

Wealth is really a means to work out dharma. If one uses it merely for
personal enjoyment, it is vainly spent.

To God be the praise. I am only the slave of God.

God will show His love. He is kind to all.

Whenever you undertake to do something, do it thoroughly or not at all.

One’s sin will not cease till one falls at the feet of Sadhus

Be ashamed of your hatred. Give up hatred and be quiet.

The Moral Law is inexorable, so follow it, observe it, and you will
reach your goal: God is the perfection of the Moral Law.

I am your servants’ servant.

Always think of God and you will see what He does.

Have faith and patience. Then I will be always with you wherever you are.

Sai Nathay Arpanasthu Shubham Bhavtu.

Panaji: After two days exposition of the holy Padukas (sacred footwear) of Shree Sai Baba in the state capital city of Panaji, they (the holy Padukas) left for their abode - Shirdi Sausthan in Maharashtra.

Prakash Parsekar / DNA The exposition, first of its kind outside Maharashtra, was attended by around 75,000 Sai devotees begining from wee hours of Sunday.

A huge pendal was erected at the Sports Authority of India (SAI) ground here. People from all walks of life, came for a glimpse of the Padukas, which are one amongst the three pairs wore by the saint.

"Two other pairs are at Shirdi Saunsthan... One is kept at the museum while another is periodically brought out for darshan every Thursday," Ashok Khambekar, Shirdi Sausthan's Trustee, told reporters here.

He said that the Padukas were brought out of the state 90 years after the saint gained samadhi in 1918.

"These Padukas will be carried all across the country. On March one, we will hold exposition of the Padukas at Raipur followed by Kolkatta on March 5," Khambekar said.

Goa chief minister Digamber Kamat had welcomed the Padukas on Saturday when they arrived in the state's Northern border at Patradevi.

Baba's Love for devotees.

Sai Baba always allows devotees to serve and no one is allowed to interfere in this matter.Once Venubai Kaojlagi known as Mausi Bai was messaging the Baba's stomach with force, seeing it other devotees asked her," Maa! please press the stomach of Baba's slowly, doing like it will break the veins and intestine of Baba." Before they could complete it Baba got up from the assan, his eyes were red with anger. Who has the courage to stop him? He put the satka with his both hands on his stomach and other end on the ground and started pressing hard, satka was almost 3feet long and it appeared it will make a hole and enter Baba's body. All the people were very afraid of it.Baba was getting stronger and getting nearer and all were afraid if may enter the stomach. All were stunned. They were standing like a group of dumb due to astonishment and fear. Infect devotees were willing to indicate Mausi Bai to do the service with politeness. No was willing to harm Baba.Devotees has done in the light of their love for Baba, but do not like interference of others in such things. Devotees were upset that somthing done in good-sence, how it resulted inversely, but they can't do anything except being on-lookers.By the grace of luck Baba's anger came down, leaving the satka, he again sat on his assan.

Devotees learnt now that they will not interfere in others and allow others to serve Baba as thier wish. Only Baba is perfect to value the service.
Shri Sadguru Sainathaparanamasthu, Shubam Bhavtu.

Sai Baba's communication with his devotees.

M.B. Rege was one of the favoured devotees of Sai baba, relating his reminiscences of Sai baba to Narasimha Swamiji he said,"I look upon Baba as the Creator, Preserver, and Destroyer, HE had no limitations. I thought of Him as a mental or spiritual image in which the finite and the infinite is blended perfectly and yet allowing the finite to appear before us at times.

There are three ways in which the Sai Baba communicates with his devotees. The First was the active waking state: when the devotees are in the difficulties or Baba wanted him to take particular course, the devotee got an inspiration on what course should be taken and the feeling that the inspiration came from Baba. This happened in Rege's case. When he was in Radhakrishna Ayi's house he would feel that Baba called him and would go to the Dwarka Mai and find Baba was in fact waiting for him. The Second method related to the sleeping or trance state. Baba would appear in a dream or a trance, This is called 'Sakshatkara' and considered most impressive and unmistakable. In the 'Third' method Baba asked his devotee to go to some person, who would infact not even know why the devotee was sent to him, but who nevertheless helped the person in accordance with the Baba's internal and unperceived guidance. Some times the person to whom the devotee was sent was totally seems unfit to help, for instance, in the case of the rustic girl to whom Das Ganu was sent for the interpreting the Isa Upanishad. Sai Baba was conservative and impartial in his religious views asking all devotees to keep to their own religion and not to interfere with others' religions. He discouraged intolerance in every form. To him Allah and Vithal were the same as of other saints. Baba said once," Untruth I have never uttered before and nor will I utter it at any time."
